Blue Geodes of Red Top Mountain
Looking for rare blue geodes and chalcedony in the Pacific Northwest? In this video, we hike up into Washington’s Okanogan-Wenatchee Forest along Teanaway Ridge to hunt for hidden blue crystal nodules at the famous Red Top Mountain agate beds!
We dive deep into the geology behind how these geodes form and what gives blue chalcedony its distinctive sky-to-steel color (Rayleigh scattering vs. trace minerals), share essential hiking and trail tips for navigating the rough forest service roads and high elevation, and explore the fascinating local history of the nearby legendary, world-famous Ellensburg Blue Agate.
Stick around until the end where we take our rough finds to the wash station, scrub away the basalt dirt, and reveal the true colors, bands, and sparkling quartz crystal pockets hidden inside!
🌲 ROCKHOUNDING & TRAIL ETIQUETTE
Red Top Mountain sits within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Always check current USFS collection regulations, fill in any holes you dig, pack out all trash, and practice Leave No Trace to protect access for future hounds!

Step-by-Step Flat Lap Polishing: From Rough Rock to Museum Finish (9-Stage Tutorial)
Learn how to use a lapidary flat lap grinder to transform rough rock specimens into a flawless, mirror-like museum polish.
In this comprehensive, step-by-step lapidary tutorial, I break down my entire 9-stage grinding and polishing sequence on a variety of stones from common Western field finds to ultra-rare, extinct material!
Whether you are just getting started in rockhounding or looking to dial in your lapidary technique, this guide covers diamond disc progression, water management, flat lap pressure, and the honest mistakes and slip-ups to avoid so you don't ruin a valuable cabochon or specimen.
Featured Gemstones & Minerals:
Holley Blue Agate (Rare Oregon chalcedony – now closed to collecting)
Horse Canyon Agate (Legendary California moss/plume agate – protected/closed locality)
Regional favorites from California, Oregon, and Nevada (chalcedony, jasper, and banded agates)
What You’ll Learn in This Video
-Setting up your flat lap for consistent grinding and slurry control
The complete 9-stage grit sequence (coarse diamond grinding through ultra-fine polish).
-How to read scratch patterns and know exactly when to advance discs
-Avoiding common lapidary mistakes: deep scratches, undercut edges, and disc contamination
